The Cathedral Valley Loop is a rugged backcountry drive in Capitol Reef National Park. The route covers 57.6 miles (92.7 km) of dirt roads and takes 6 to 8 hours. Visitors must use the right vehicle and check weather conditions before departing.

Do you need 4WD for Cathedral Valley?

Yes, you need a high-clearance 4WD vehicle to drive the loop safely.

The National Park Service defines high clearance as a minimum of 8 inches of ground clearance. The route involves uneven terrain, deep sand, and mud. Standard 2WD cars do not have the clearance or traction required.

Why is high clearance necessary?

High clearance is required to cross the Fremont River and navigate deep sand.

Accessing the Hartnet Road requires fording the Fremont River. This crossing starts 11.7 miles (18.8 km) east of the Capitol Reef Visitor Center. Deep sand and uneven rocks are also common throughout the valley.

What happens to the roads when it rains?

The dirt roads become completely impassable when wet.

Wet Bentonite clay turns highly slick and gummy. Driving on it leaves deep scars that last for years. You will get trapped if you attempt the drive during or immediately after rain.

How do you check current road conditions?

Call the Capitol Reef automated line at 435-425-3791 and press 4.

Always check this number before starting the 6 to 8 hour drive. You should also check the water level and river bottom conditions at the visitor center before crossing the Fremont River.

  • Printed or downloaded offline topographic maps
  • Plenty of drinking water (no potable water is available)

Can you visit without a 4WD vehicle?

Yes, by booking a guided 4x4 tour from a local outfitter.

Local guides in Torrey or Hanksville provide suitable high-clearance vehicles. This is an excellent option for visitors without 4WD or those uncomfortable with river crossings.
