Bentonite Hills Region

The Bentonite Hills display colorful, softly-contoured clay bands formed from ancient volcanic ash. This area requires careful planning to navigate its unpaved roads and river crossings safely.

Formed 150 to 157 million years ago, the Bentonite Hills feature striking bands of maroon, green, and gray. You can visit two main sections: the primary hills inside Capitol Reef National Park and a secondary area near Hanksville.

Accessing the national park section requires crossing the Fremont River. Ensure you have a high-clearance 4WD vehicle and check weather conditions before your trip.

Capitol Reef Bentonite Hills

1 hourHartnet Road

These softly-contoured hills lie along the Hartnet Road inside the park. The clay has a unique popcorn-like texture due to weathering. You must stick to firm areas or wash bottoms to protect the soil. Never drive or walk here after rain, as the wet clay becomes incredibly gummy and will trap you.
